Before you fly
Setting up payment for China
Linking an international card to Alipay or WeChat Pay takes about ten minutes. Knowing whether it will actually work is a different question — and the one that matters.
- Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB and UnionPay are accepted
- Passport verification is required before cards transact
- Set up both apps — the same card can behave differently

Linking a card is not the same as being able to pay
Alipay and WeChat Pay will happily accept an international card and then decline the actual transaction. This is the single most misunderstood part of paying in China, and it is why the only reliable check is a real payment.
What you need before you start
- A passport — both apps require passport-based identity verification before international cards can transact.
- An international card from Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover, Diners Club, or UnionPay International.
- Your bank's permission — many issuers block overseas or CNY transactions by default. Call ahead if you are unsure.
The setup order that works
- Install both apps before you fly. Verification prompts are easier to complete on your home network, and SMS codes sometimes fail on roaming.
- Register with your phone number and complete passport verification immediately. Do not defer this step — international cards cannot transact until it is done.
- Link your card. Add a debit card if you have one, in addition to a credit card.
- Run a real payment test against both a business QR code and an individual QR code. This is the step almost everyone skips, and the only one that produces a real answer.
- Set up the second app too. The same card can behave differently in Alipay and WeChat Pay.

Fees and limits
| Item | Typical position |
|---|---|
| Platform service fee | Usually waived on transactions up to ¥200; roughly 3% above that. |
| Single transaction limit | Around US$5,000 after identity verification completes. |
| Annual limit | Around US$50,000 after identity verification. |
| Your own bank's fees | Your issuer may add a foreign transaction fee and its own exchange rate. This is separate from anything Alipay or WeChat charges. |
These figures change and vary by account state. Confirm the current position inside the app.
Why payments fail after the card links
| Failure | What is actually happening |
|---|---|
| Individual QR codes reject the payment | Personal QR codes commonly decline credit-card funding even after the card links successfully. Debit usually behaves better. |
| Verification incomplete | Passport verification was not finished, or the app wants another document. Nothing transacts until this clears. |
| Bank decline | Your issuer is blocking the overseas or CNY transaction. This is a bank decision, not an app problem. |
| Hotel or car-hire deposits | Pre-authorisation holds are a common failure point for foreign cards, and refunds can be slow. |
| Mini-programs | Some in-app services require a mainland bank card or Chinese ID, and will not accept an international card at all. |
| No signal | QR payment needs data. Underground stations, rural areas, and crowded venues can leave you unable to pay. |
| Merchant supports one app only | A small shop may display a single code. Having both apps set up removes this risk. |
What to do when it fails
- Try a debit card instead of credit, particularly on individual QR codes.
- Finish every verification prompt the app shows you.
- Confirm with your bank that overseas transactions are permitted.
- Test the second app — the same card often behaves differently.
- Carry cash as a fallback. See the cash guide.
If you have worked through the list and want to know where you stand, check what other travelers with your card reported.
